Überfall Getreideschiff 69 n. Chr

Commissioned by mules-of-marius.com and in cooperation with Geschichte in Miniaturen I am building a Roman river barge in scale 1:72.
This flatbottom transport boat is of 'the Zwammerdam type', called after a place in the Netherlands where 3 Roman transportships and 3 dugout canoes were found during the 1970's. For this particular diorama I build Zwammerdam ship number 6.

Hintergrund: Die Bataver (germanischer Stamm, dienen als Auxiliare bei den Römern) erheben sich gegen die Römer. Auf dem Rhein läuft ein Getreideschiff der Römer, das für nahegelegenes Lager gedacht war, auf eine Sandbank. Es wird von den Batavern überfallen und ans andere Ufer gezogen. Die Römer schicken eine Kohorte (ca. 500 Mann), um das Schiff zu retten, bevor es von den Batavern weggezogen wird. Es wird gekämpft, im Wasser (stehend) und an Land, aber das Schiff geht verloren.

Warum habe ich keine Zweifel, dass dieses Schiffsmodell ein Topmodell werden wird..?!?!

Es ist eine Freude das sich Cryns bereit erklärt hat dieses Schiffsmodell zu bauen.

Tolle Idee mit dem Getreideschiff. Ich habe auch keine Zweifel, dass das wieder toll umgesetzt wird.

Vielleicht kommt noch ein römisches Rheinschiff dazu ?

I still have that plan of yours, I keep it carefully. but I still don't know what it is: probably the plan of a medieval flatbottom boat.
The construction of the side boards that appear to be separated from the bottom planks, and the triple cross beams keeping bottom planks and side boards together, are an indication for medieval or even later construction.
These shiptypes were build in Germany until the 19th century, used on the Rhine. Germans call it Lastkahn.
I remember you got this drawing from your daughter, is that right?
Can you ask her if she knows which ship it is exactly depicting?

Nein, zu den Leuten habe ich keinen Kontakt.
Die Bilder habe ich aus dem Internet.

Mir hat das römische Rheinschiff schon immer gefallen und da ich am Rhein wohne, ist das für mich auch etwas heimatverbundenes.
Conny wollte einmal ein Boot machen. Für ihn hätte sich der Bau eines solchen Schiffes nicht gelohnt, weil aufgrund seiner Herstellung der Verkaufspreis zu hoch gewesen wäre.
Auch gibt es hierzu keine passenden römischen Figuren, die als Besatzung passend wären.

Several of such Roman river galleys already exist.

Oliver Werbeck (Lucky Ned Pepper) made an Oberstimmboat in 1:72. It is crewed by Imperial Roman rowers in full armour. The crew is made in metal and probably made by Joerg Schmaling. The boat is resin cast with lasercut wooden frame inside.
I have in mind this ship is in a diorama made by Mules-of-Marius and Geschichte in Miniaturen but I am not sure.
Can somebody confirm this?

The university of Trier made a 3D scale model of the Lusoria.

I am considering to contact them and ask if they can print a scale 1:72 version.

But the shipwrecks of this kind of galleys all date from around the 3rd century AD so are late Imperial Roman.
It is not sure if such galleys were already in use during the Batavian Revolt of 69 AD.
Though Trajans column show bigger rivergalleys from around 100 AD at the Danube.

Thomas Kurtz from Mules-of-Marius made a sketch of the historic situation near Krefeld in 69AD. A roman transportship is involved and some dugout-canoes will be added to the scene.
